Natural Wonders of the World
A Gift from Mother nature


There are hundreds of Natural Wonders of the world. Some of them are more famous than the others, but they are all gifts that Mother Nature has given us without having to build them.

The word wonder may have many meanings, for me a wonder of nature is even the little flower that grows wild in the fields or the small spring the runs from beneath the slopes of the mountain. I write here about all of them trying to give you the best information I have from my years of travel and experience.

Famous Rivers

  • The Nile River is perhaps the most famous river in the world, besides being the longer. It starts in Central Africa, runs through Sudan and Egypt all the way to the Mediterranean Sea at the Nile Delta
  • The Amazon River is formed from tributaries of other South American Countries like Peru and Ecuador. The Amazon is mainly a Brazilian river. It carries the greatest amount of water of all rivers of the world
  • The Mississippi and Missouri Rivers start as the Missouri and continue as the Mississippi dividing North America into west east and west and comes out into the Gulf of Mexico

  • Yangtze River, also called Chang Jiang in China runs from the Tibet Plateau to the East China Sea. The Yangtze River plays a large role in the history, culture and economy of China. It flows through a wide array of ecosystems and is a habitat to several endangered species
  • The Mekong River, starts on the Tibetan Plateau and runs through China's Yunnan province, Burma, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam.
  • Parana River in Central South America runs through Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina. It is second in length only to the Amazon River among South American rivers . It merges first with the Paraguay River and the Uruguay River to form the Río de la Plata.

  • The Huang He, also called Yellow River in China it is called the “Cradle of Chinese Civilization”

  • Congo River, also called Zaire River the Republic of Congo in Africa
  • Rio Grande, also called Rio Bravo form a national border between the United States and Mexico.  It comes out on the Gulf of Mexico on the border of the State of Texas and the Mexican State of Tamaulipas

Famous Waterfalls                

The waterfalls are a true spectacle to watch. Some of them like Niagara, Victoria and Iguazu are well preserved for humanity. But sometimes economic interests prevail and some waterfalls practically disappear as in the case of Guaira Falls in Paraguay that gave way to the Itaipu Dam

  • Niagara Falls of the Niagara River are located between the Canadian province of Ontario and the US State of New York
  • Dettifoss Falls are located in Vatnajökull National Park in Northeast Iceland, and is reputed to be the most powerful waterfall in Europe

  • Angel falls in Venezuela is the world's highest waterfall; it drops over the edge of the Auyantepui mountain in the Canaima National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site in the Gran Sabana region of Bolívar State

  • Yosemite Falls in California are the highest falls in North America
  • Gullfoss Waterfalls are located the canyon of Hvita River in southwest Iceland and is the country’s most popular attraction
  • Shoshone Falls of the Snake River is located near the town of Twin Falls, Idaho. They are sometimes called the Niagara Falls of the west

  • Huangguoshu Waterfall, also known as Yellow Fruit Tree Waterfall, is one of the largest waterfalls in China and East Asia located on the Baihe River in Anshun, Guizhou Province

  • Ramnefjellsfossen, also known as Utigardsfossen or Utigordsfossen are located on the mountain, Ramnefjellet, in the municipality of Stryn in Sogn og Fjordane county, Norway

Famous Mountains

The great mountains have always inspired awe among different civilizations. Some countries have their sacred mountains and worship their Gods for health and well being. Other people like the mountains for hiking and climbing. Here are the most famous.

  • Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Africa
  • Vinson Massif in the Antarctica Continent
  • Carstensz Pyramid on the Sudirman Range in Indonesia
  • Everest in the Himalayas in the country of Nepal
  • Elbrus in the Caucasus, Russian Federation
  • Mount McKinley, also called Denali in the State of Alaska          
  • Aconcagua on the Andes Mountains in Argentina
  • Mont Blanc in France and Switzerland in Europe
  • Mount Etna in the Island of Sicily on the Mediterranean, Italy
  • Mount Cook Yukon is located between the Yukon Territory of Canada and Alaska

Famous Volcanoes

  • Mount Aetna also spelled Etna is located on the island of Sicily, Italy and is the highest active volcano in Europe

  • Mount Mazama is located within Crater Lake National Park in the State of Oregon, USA
  • Mount Vesuvius covered the towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum in an eruption in 79 A.D preserving them intact for generations to come. It is located near Naples in Italy

  • Mount Tambora, Indonesia is the deadliest volcano in history. When it erupted in 1815 it killed an estimated 92,000 people, not only by the explosion but by the starvation brought on by the agricultural devastation in the volcano's wake.

  • Parícutin in Mexico has its story. In February 1943, a pile of ash began to rise from a corn field near the town of Parícutin, a mountain began to emerge from the earth, reaching a height of 1,200 feet in one year. It was an opportunity for the world to see the birth of a volcano.

  • Mount St Helens in the State of Washington erupted in our times on May 18, 1980 after being dormant for 123 years. Luckily the seismic studies of the volcano prevented a major loss of life.

  • Mount Krakatau is located in Indonesia. It exploded with such force in 1883 that was heard in Australia, 2,000 miles or 3,200 km away. It triggered tsunamis that reached the Hawaiian Islands and the western Coast of South America.

  • Nevado del Ruiz in Colombia erupted in 1985. Its eruption was mild but the mudslides cause by the melting snows, resulted in the death of 23,000 people in the town of Armero
  • Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines killed almost 800 people leaving an estimated of 100,000 homeless. Its eruption was much bigger than the one of Mount St Helens. It was the first time that such an event was televised to world as it happened.

  • Mount Pelee is located in the island of Martinique on the French Caribbean. The eruption of 1902 killed almost 30,000 people mostly because of the flow of a deadly, fast moving cloud of hot gas and liquidized volcanic particles.
