Finland Tourism is a best kept secret in Europe, Finland called Suomi in Finish, is officially the Republic of Finland is a Nordic country situated in the Fennoscandian region of Northern Europe.

It is bordered by Sweden to the west, Norway to the north, Russia to the east, and Estonia to the south across the Gulf of Finland. Let me show you a few of the highlights of a visit to Finland.

  • The Fortress of Suomenlinna

This example of European Military Architecture, located at the entrance of Helsinki’s harbor. It represents a fortress saving the country from foreign invasions. It has been like that since the 18th century.

It is a leading tourist attraction in Helsinki the Capital of Finland. You get there by an inter-island motor boat from the port in Katajanokanlaituri, Helsinki. The journey takes about 15 minutes.

We grew up thinking the Santa Claus lives there at the North Pole. Santa Claus Village is an amusement park near the town of Rovaniemi inside the Arctic Circle in Lapland.

But Lapland offers also great forests, frozen lakes during the winters. Many of the resorts offer traditional cottages near the winter sport facilities for those that like skiing, and cross country skiing as well as snowboarding Safari with the company of a Siberian husky. Remember that during summers the sun shines here all day.

This town known for its wooden architecture and high quality lace is one of the oldest ports in Finland. Before it was declared a town it had a Franciscan Monastery and a Catholic Church, later they opened there a Teacher’s College annexed to the University of Turku. It is still the fifth largest port in Finland.

  • Helsinki Cathedral

This is one of the most beautiful landmarks in Finland. It was built before the Independence of Finland in 1917 as a tribute to the Grand Duke Nicholas I, then Czar of Russia.

It is in the form of a Greek Cross composed of a central square and four arms to add to its beauty. The main green dome is surrounded by four smaller ones in the neoclassical style. It is located on Senate Square and of the top tourists’ attractions in Helsinki, Capital of Finland.

  • Tampere Cathedral

This cathedral built by Lars Sonck during the years 1902-07 is a typical example of Finish Art Nouveau architecture, with wall and ceiling paintings by Hugo Simberg, an altar fresco of the Resurrection by Magnus Enckell and liturgical utensils by Eric Ehrström.

This park located on the eastern region of Finland is famous for its landscapes, influenced by the slash-and-burn agriculture during the past 250 years. Its species are very diverse including natural boreal forests, rock vegetation, Fennoscadian herb-rich forests and lowland meadows.

  • Lake Saimaa

Lake Saimaa, located on the Finnish Lakeland is also called the "lake of a thousand islands". The area occupies a vast land on the eastern part of the country and is a complex of lakes and rivers around numerous islands.

The southern Finnish town of Turku , the country's oldest town and once its capital, lies on the Gulf of Bothnia, at the mouth of the Aurajoki.

Being that 5% of the population is Swedish Speaking and the proximity to Sweden, it attracts many Swedish visitors during the year.

It is an industrial town and an important port busy with export and import trade.

  • Hameenlinna

The town of Hameenlina was founded by the Swedish Governor in 1639 near the Tavastehus Castle, a red brick building, is one of the important landmarks of the region along with Aulanko Park

Finish composer Jean Sibelius (1865-1957), poet Paavo Cajander (1846-1913) were born here.

This is the largest lake region in Europe, with thousands of blue lakes and tree covered islands. It is very popular destination for Finnish Families coming from the cities on the west and south.

What attracts the tourists is the peace and quiet of this natural and serene area. There is an abundance of wildlife and many lush forests. This is the place to get away from daily routine.
