Xochimilco is a UNESCO World Heritage Site

It was declared by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site back in 1987 and for good reason. You’ll see as many colors as you wish among the aisles and the canals with the floating “trajineras” which in my times we used to call chalupas. Discover the small artificial islands, called chinampas, which are used to grow flowers, vegetables and ornamental plants.

This is the best and only way to tour Xochimilco. After some bargaining, rent one and board it, either with your significant other or the whole family.

Sail through the canals, that have been there for ages and bring some drinks and food onboard, that is easily found everywhere.

While sailing, you’ll pass near other chalupas with musicians called “Mariachis”, that will get near you and play for you, at a small fee” anything you ask for.

He Marimba from Veracruz and the voice and instruments of the Mariachis will make your skin crawl.

Xochimilco is located in Southern Mexico City

This is a lower working-class neighborhood located among the canals that are part of the water transport system built by the Aztecs in Pre-Colombian Mexico. The name comes from the Nahuatl language. The borough is centered on the formerly independent city of Xochimilco, which was established on what was the southern shore of Lake Xochimilco in the pre-Hispanic period.
